Coastal Men's Soccer Routs Richmond To Win VCU Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. - Coastal Carolina scored seven second half goals to beat Richmond 10-1 Sunday afternoon to win the 2011 VCU Invitational Tournament.

Ashton Bennett, Cyprian Hedrick, Luis Faz and keeper Scott Angevine were selected to the all-tournament team with Bennett tabbed as the MVP and Justin Portillo receiving the fair play award.

Bennett opened the scoring during the first minute on a shot from the right side of the field into the lower right corner of the goal. The scoring continued for Coastal as Hedrick headed a ball off the right post that ricocheted back to TeeJay East who placed the ball in the left side of the goal putting the Chants up 2-1 in the 4th minute.

Richmond answered in the 8th minute off a corner kick from the left side where it was headed in by Brandon Houser.

Bennett added the third Coastal goal of the afternoon off a header from Pedro Ribeiro which created a breakaway for Bennett who sent the ball to the left side of the goal putting the Chants up 3-1 at the half.

Leo Mukofsky added a pair of assists during the opening minutes of the second half, playing a ball to Ribeiro who tapped the ball in the left side of the goal. Thirty five seconds later Ricky Garbanzo played a corner kick short to Mukofsky who then passed it back to Garbanzo sending the ball to the top left of the net for a 5-1 advantage in the 47th minute.

Sophomore Justin Portillo took a shot in the 53rd minute that was blocked but he collected the rebound and beats two Spider defenders sending the ball in the lower left corner of the net. Bennett capped his hat trick cleaning up after a Sean McCormick shot that was deflected by Richmond keeper Thomas Hand in the 56th minute.

Robby Joe Daniels added Coastal's eighth and ninth goals which came within 41 seconds of each other with Ribeiro playing a ball from the right side where Daniels tapped it in during the 64th minute. Adam Schmoker sent a ball from the right corner to the front the goal where Daniels touches it to the back of the net.

The final score of the game came form McCormick who chipped the ball in from the top of the '18 sending it to the top left corner of the goal.

The 10 goals for the Chants tied for seventh on the all-time list for goals scored in a single game in Coastal Carolina history.

Reserve keeper Montrell Morgan added a pair of saves in today's game which included stopping a penalty kick.

Faz and Cyprian held together the defensive side of the ball, playing all 180 minutes this weekend holding opponents to 10 shots on goal while Angevine and Morgan recorded a combined eight saves.

The Chants return to the pitch Friday, September 9 playing host to George Washington at 7:30 pm as a part of the Coastal Carolina University adidas Invitational.
