No. 18/21 Chanticleers Fall at No. 17 Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 18/21 Coastal Carolina University men's soccer team opened the 2016 campaign with a 2-1 defeat at No. 17 Virginia. Coastal counted a goal by Wes White, but the Chanticleers conceded goals to UVA's Paddy Foss (PK) and 73rd minute strike by Edward Opoku.
The lead would not last long as Virginia's Paddy Foss leveled the game at 1-1 with penalty kick conversion in the seventh minute.
In the 28th minutes Pierrot was shown a red card, leaving the Chants with 10 men the rest of the way.
Neither team scored in the remainder of the opening 45 minutes, leaving the two top-25 squads deadlock 1-1 at the intermission.
UVA's Edward Opoku produced the eventual game-winner in the 73rd minute with a tap in off a well-placed cross from Raheem Taylor-Parkes.
Coastal created chances in the final 10 minutes, but the Cavaliers stood firm each time.
Virginia outshot Coastal 16-10 in the match and earned nine corners to the Chants' four.
Chanticleer keeper Alexandre Bouillennec was credited with four saves, while Virginia's Jeff Caldwell notched three stops.
Coastal Carolina continues its season-opening road trip at William & Mary on Monday at 6 p.m.
