Men's Soccer Falls at George Mason in Season Opener
Fairfax, Va. - Coastal Carolina's men's soccer team started the 2017 season at George Mason and did not start the season the way they had hoped in a narrow 2-1 loss.
It was a match which saw the Chanticleers (0-1-0) control the game from the opening kick, but could not find the back of the net in the one-goal loss.
It only took one kick from George Mason's (1-0-0) Tunde Akinlosotu on a header in the seventh minute to give the host a 1-0 lead. Not only was it GM's first shot of the game, it was only one of three in the opening 45 minutes.
Even though the Chants were attacking the goal it finally took first-year player Yazeed Matthews picking up a loose ball in front of the net to even the match at one in the 38th minute.
The half ended with the two teams even at one even as CCU outshot GMU 13-3 and 5-1 in shots on goal.
The second half was much the same, but again, GM took the lead and had the eventual match-winner off the foot of Henning Kirks in the 60th minute.
CCU continued to pepper the goal, but were unsuccessful in the second half of scoring. CCU finished the game out shooting the Patriots 20-6.
The Chants will also be on the road in their next outing as they travel to Washington, D.C. to face the Hoyas of Georgetown.
