SAN MARTIN, CALIF. -- In the unique play-six, count-five event, the Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a 13-over 373 and sit in sixth after the first round of the CordeValle Collegiate, Nov. 3. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by Santa Clara University, is being played at the CordeValle Country Club (Par 72 - 7,119 yards) in San Martin, Calif.
The No. 40 Chanticleers rallied after a slow start, going 13-over among the counting scores on the front nine, but rallied to go even-par on the back side to finish at 373. No. 4 Southern California leads at 3-under 357, with Charlotte in second at 367. No. 11 Stanford and No. 6 Arkansas are tied for third at 370, with just seven shots separating second (367) through tied for seventh (374).
Redshirt senior Zack Byrd continued his solid play over the last two tournaments, shooting a 2-under 70 in the first round to sit in a tie for third. Two other Chanticleers are in the top 10 as senior Cameron Hooper is tied for sixth at 1-under 71 and junior Dan Obremski is tied for 10th at even-par 72. The Coastal Carolina scoring was rounded out by sophomores Tripp McAllister and David Dannelly tied for 63rd at 8-over 80, with junior Sam Lyons in 73rd at 82.
The second round will be played Tuesday, Nov. 4, with the Chants going off No. 1 starting at 8:36 PST, playing with No. 23 Washington.
