Men's Golf Captures Team Title at Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Intercollegiate

More Information:

JONESBOROUGH, TENN.The Coastal Carolina University men’s golf team used its consistent solid play to capture the team title at The Bank of Tennessee at the Ridges Invitational, Oct. 24-26. Hosted by East Tennessee State, the three-day, 54-hole tournament was played at The Ridges Country Club (Par 72 – 7,147 yards) in Jonesborough, Tenn.

Entering the final round, the Chanticleers were tied for second with host No. 33 East Tennessee State, two shots behind No. 39 Wake Forest. Coastal Carolina continued to battle in the final round and sat in a tie for second heading to No. 18, four shots behind ETSU and tied with Wake Forest. On the last hole, the Chants made the most of it, going 1-under, while ETSU posted a triple and a bogey among their counting scores to play the hole in 4-over and Wake Forest was 1-over. With that final hole, Coastal Carolina claimed the team title at 869, one shot ahead of East Tennessee State and two ahead of Wake. The Chants were consistent throughout the tournament, not posting a score above 75 in the counters. The tournament featured eight teams ranked in the top 50 in the nation according to Golfstat.

“After Chicago, there was no panic in the team,” Head Coach Allen Terrell said. “We were just starting our season and going against teams that had played three or four tournaments already under their belts. We came back and went through a little bit of adversity but the team came together through it and was stronger. The team really believes in itself and understands it can accomplish when doing it the right way. Sometimes, it takes time for that belief to pay off, and it did this weekend.”

The Chants were led by redshirt senior Zack Byrd, as he tied for second individually with a 1-under 215, five shots behind champion Darren Blair of North Carolina State. Junior Dan Obremski tied for sixth at even-par 216, while sophomore Tripp McAllister tied for 18th at 220. Senior Cameron Hooper and sophomore David Dannelly rounded out the Chanticleer effort, both tying for 30th at 222, including Hooper's final round 1-under 71, the top Coastal Carolina score in the final round.

“It was rewarding to see the upperclassmen play well,” Terrell continued. “Zack had a great tournament overall and Cameron rallied after a tough second round and his final round (1-under 71) was a big key why we won. We have talked and worked hard on being a strong finishing team. Usually last three or four holes of a course are the toughest and that was especially true on this golf course. Today, we played the 18th hole in 1-under and that was the difference in winning the tournament, as all the other leading teams were over par on the hole. I saw the patience that is seen more in May, not late October, as our guys hung in and managed the mistakes well and kept putting themselves in position to have a chance. We never lost focus and I am very proud of their effort and this win.”

“It has been a long time since we have won,” Byrd said. “We haven't won a regular season event since April of 2006, and we had a rough start to our season two weeks ago in Chicago. After that event (in Chicago), we came home, re-evaluated our play, and worked on getting back in the mindset of winning each week.”

Coastal Carolina wraps up its fall schedule at the CordeValle Collegiate, Mon.-Wed., Nov. 3-5 at the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif.
