Men's Golf Leads Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic After Two Rounds

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf team got off to a solid start and leads the 2006 Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic after the first two rounds, Oct. 8. The 54-hole event, hosted Duke University, is being played at the Duke Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,105 yards) in Durham, N.C., the site of the 1962 and 2001 NCAA Championships.

The teams played through periodic rain during the morning session with temperatures throughout the day in the low 60s with 12 mph winds out of the Northeast. After the morning round, the 21st-ranked Chanticleers shot an even-par 288 and trailed #16 North Carolina by two shots. However, Coastal posted the best round of the day in the afternoon, firing a six-under 282 to post a 36-hole total of 570, four shots ahead of the Tar Heels. Virginia Commonwealth is in third at 578.

Senior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C./Dutch Fork) led the Chanticleers and the field, as he is at seven-under 137 through the first two rounds and has a one-shot lead over David Holzworth of North Carolina entering the final 18. Junior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) is currently tied for eighth at even-par 144, while senior Moises Cobo (Seville, Spain/Pendleton School (Fla.)) and freshman Sam Lyons (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) are two shots behind Byrd in a tie for 15th.

The Chanticleers will tee off their final 18 holes, starting on the No. 1 tee at 9:30 a.m., Oct. 9 and playing with North Carolina and VCU.
