Celtic Manor, Wales - Day 3 (Saturday) started quite early with just a few hours sleep the night prior. It was a beautiful morning in Wales. Clear skies and light winds.
The team was re-starting at 7:45 am so I had to meet Dustin for a quick putting lesson at 7 am. He is a great putter but always has struggled with his putting in team formats. It isn't his technique rather it is the change of routine in the team matches. I never understood why the players change their process once at the Ryder Cup. They spend the entire year reading the putts with their caddie but when they get here the players starts listening to his partner. As well, every player reads putts differently with different visuals of how the ball will go into the hole. Dustin looked so uncomfortable over the putter. He definitely was getting way too much information about a simple putt. He just needs to keep his own routine and let his partners worry about their game. Partner matches are about strategy and not about getting extra advice. Hopefully Dustin stays within himself the remainder of the matches and starts playing his game.
With that said, Phil and Dustin were partners again for the foursome matches. Again, they just struggled with their putting. Foursome matches will get you out of your routine even more. Putting is so much about momentum. You don't have momentum when you putt every other hole. Unfortunately, Paddy and Ross beat our boys on the 16th hole. Thankfully, the US played solid and had a 6 to 4 lead going into session 3.
Dustin and Jim Furyk were tabbed as partners for fourball matches in the afternoon against Padraig Harrington and Ross Fisher. Darkness halted the matches for the second straight day. Padraig and Ross played the first 6 holes in four under and had a 1 up lead.
The weather does not look good for tomorrow (Sunday). I am afraid they will not play until later in the afternoon. As well, we have to get back to London this evening to make our flight back to the states. Unfortunately, it appears we will miss closing ceremonies.
I wish the best for my team in the final round in Tampa today. They are playing in a strong field and sit in 4th. We need a complete team effort today to catch Virginia. Take it deep boys. I am proud of you and will see you soon
