Chanticleers have three invididuals in the top 50

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's golf team is ranked 12th in the country this week, according to GolfWeek's latest rankings. CCU finished the 2004-05 season ranked 36th by GolfWeek and entered the 2005-06 season in the 23rd spot.

Coastal, also ranked third in Region 3N, had a team rating of 70.52 after finishing fifth at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio. The four teams that finished ahead of CCU are all ranked in the top 25, while the Chants defeated four teams in the top 25 and eight ranked in the top 50 nationally.

Individually, CCU had three players ranked in the top 50 nationally. Junior Moises Cobo (Seville, Spain) is ranked 25th after the opening event with a 69.12 rating. Sophomore Zack Byrd (Little River, S.C.) is currently 47th, while junior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C.), who was named pre-season Third-Team All-American by Golfweek and one of the top 50 Players to Watch by GolfWorld, is right behind Byrd in 48th.

Last season, the Chanticleers won their second consecutive Big South Conference title and fourth in the last six years, earning the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Regionals. Johnson was the Big South Player of the Year, while Byrd was the Freshman of the Year and Individual Medalist at the championship.

CCU tied for eighth at the 2005 NCAA East Regional to advance to the program's and conference's first-ever NCAA Men's Golf Championship berth in Nashville, Tenn. Johnson, a third-team All-American in 2004-05, captured the individual title at the regional with a final round and school-record 64 to finish at 15-under 198, the best 54-hole total in school and league history. He defeated Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State, who started the 2005-06 year as the No. 2 ranked golfer in the country. At the NCAAs, Coastal finished in a tie for 20th after three rounds, missing the top-15 cut for the final round.

Coastal will be back on the course Mon.-Tue., Oct. 3-4 at the The Club Glove Intercollegiate hosted by Pepperdine University. The 54-hole event will take place at Saticoy Country Club in Somis, Calif.
