Coastal’s Thadd Obecny II Earns Sun Belt Honor
Coastal Carolina senior Thadd Obecny II was voted the Sun Belt Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week for his runner-up finish at the Janney VCU Shootout earlier this week.
Obecny tied for the field lead with 14 birdies over the three rounds. His runner-up finish was not only his best career finish but it marked his first career top five finish as well as just his second top 20 finish.
Obecny’s score of 207 was seven strokes better than his previous 54-hole total and tied Dustin Johnson for 12th on the CCU 54-hole scoring list. In fact, only there have only been six better 54-hole scores (by a combined 11 people) in school history.
In addition to his outstanding individual effort, Obecny helped Coastal to one of its best team results in three years. Coastal’s team total of 9-under par 855 is the program’s best 54-hole score since carding an 851 at the 2013 NCAA Championship, which was played at a par 70 course. It was the program’s best 54-hole event score on a par 72 course since shooting 854 and finishing third at the 2013 Seminole Intercollegiate. Overall, the Chanticleers placed fourth in the 12-team field at VCU to open with an 8-3 record.
Coastal Carolina will return to action Oct. 7-8 at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, played in Chapel Hill, N.C., at North Carolina’s Finley Golf Club.
