28th Annual World Amateur Team Championship

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina sophomore men's golfer Peter Valasek will be playing in the 28th Annual World Amateur Team Championship as he will be representing his native Slovakia Oct. 4-7, 2012 in Antalya, Turkey.

Valasek also played for Slovakia in the 2010 World Amateur Team Championship, an event that brings the world's best amateurs together every two years. The event, which began in 1958, has three representatives from each country with each team counting its top two scores in each round toward the team total. This year's Championship will be played at the Antalya Golf Course (PGA Sultan Course) and the Cornelia Golf Course (Faldo Course).

"Playing in the World Amateur is one of the top honors a player can earn." said CCU Director of Golf Allen Terrell. "Not only are you recognized as one of the top three amateur players in your country, you are playing with the top amateurs in the world in an event that many of the golf greats have played before embarking on their professional careers. We are proud Peter will not just be representing Slovakia, but representing Coastal Carolina as well."

Valasek led his Slovakian team to a tie for 50th finish in 2010 in the 69-team field. He carded rounds of 76-74 before finishing with a final round 82 for a 54-hole total of 232. The Slovakian team reached as high as 39th after 36 holes as Valasek turned in a 74 and Stefan Palenik carded a 73 in round two.

Valasek is in his second year with the CCU golf program. He tied for 12th as a freshman at last spring's Big South Championship and tied for ninth at Coastal's General Hackler Championship. He opened the 2012-13 season by shooting an eight-over 224 and helping the Chanticleers tie for second at the Gene Miranda Invitational.

The Chants return to action Sept. 23-24 at the annual Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern at the Evanston Golf Club.
