CONWAY - Two Coastal Carolina golf alums - Dustin Johnson and Alvaro Velasco - won tournaments this weekend that were significant.

Johnson, playing in his fourth final group of the 2010 season, won his fourth career PGA event firing a two-under par 69 and coming from one stroke down to win the BWM Championship at Cog Hill with a nine-under par score over four days. The three-time All-American while at Coastal was the only golfer among the leaders to not record a bogey over the final nine holes, including a birdie on 17 to have a one-shot lead heading into the 54th and final hole. Johnson vaulted to second in the FedEx Championship points standings and, with the win at the season-ending THE TOUR Championship, will win the FedEx Cup as the PGA's champion of the 2010 season, which occurs Sept. 23-26 at Atlanta's East Lake Golf Club.

Velasco secured his second Challenge Tour title of the season and with it a return to The European Tour at the money-spinning Kazakhstan Open. The two-time All-Big South honoree and 2004 league Player of the Year while at Coastal, closed with a round of 69 to finish 21 under par. After a stunning 65 on day three his four-birdie round of 69 was a more measured affair, but it was still more than good enough to take the title. The victory moved Velasco to the top of the Challenge Tour Rankings with earnings of 127,013 euros and guaranteed him a return to The European Tour for the 2011 season.

The 2010-11 Coastal Carolina men's golf team will open its season play Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 13-14) at College of Charleston's The Invitational, played at the Ocean course at Kiawah Island.
