ST. ANDREWS BAY, SCOTLAND -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf team finished third at the International Collegiate, contested in Scotland, Sept. 1-3. This was the first event of the year for the defending Big South Conference champions and the first time under head coach Allen Terrell that the team has traveled to Europe.
The Chanticleers entered the final round in fifth but fired the best round of the three-day event, a 10-under 278, to finish at six-under 858 and move up two spots into third behind champion North Carolina (nine-under) and runner-up Wake Forest (seven-under).
Individually, senior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C./Dutch Fork) finished as the individual runner-up and top American collegian after shooting an eight-under 208, five shots behind champion Gordon Yates of Stirling (Scotland). Sophomore Cameron Hooper (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) tied for eighth at five-under 211, while junior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) was in a tie for 11th at four-under 212 after a final round 66. Above all, Terrell knows the trip had more meaning than just another golf tournament.
"The International Collegiate is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the players," Terrell said. "Our boosters have been overly gracious to make this trip happen. To have the privilege of playing the Old Course, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie is an umnatched experience. We are thrilled that we have been able to take our student-athletes to the United Kingdom. We know there will be lifetime memories created from this voyage. The cultural education and the friendships formed during this event will be lifelong."
The Chanticleers return to the course Mon.-Tue., Sept. 18-19 at the Inverness Intercollegiate. The event is hosted by the University of Toledo at the Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio.
