CONWAY, S.C. -- Former Coastal Carolina University golfers Zack Byrd and Dustin Johnson each had solid weeks in their respective events.
Playing in his final competition as an amateur, Byrd tied for third at the prestigious Cardinal Amateur at the Cardinal Golf & Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Byrd fired a 1-under 71 in the final round to finish with a three-round score of 2-under 214 (72-71-71). He was six shots behind champion Clayton Rotz of Chambersburg, Pa. Byrd now sets his sights on the PGA Tour Qualifying School in the coming weeks.
Johnson, competing in his first PGA Championship, fired a 2-under 70 in the final round and tied for 10th in the event with a score of even-par 288 (72-73-73-70). In his final round at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., he posted four birdies and two bogeys, shooting a 1-under 35 on each side, with his 70 tying for the lowest score on the final round. He will earn more than $130,000 for his work this week.
