Men's Golf Announces 2008-09 Schedule
CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina University's men's golf program will compete in 10 regular season tournaments, including the nationally-renowned General Jim Hackler Championship, as well as going for its sixth straight Big South Conference championship, Head Coach Allen Terrell announced today.
The highlight of the Chanticleers season will be the annual General Jim Hackler Championship, hosted for the seventh straight year at the TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C. This year's field is the best in the program's history, as all 13 teams played in last year's NCAA Regionals, with five advancing to the NCAA Championship, including defending national champion UCLA making its first appearance at the event. It also features the last five team champions of the tournament, including Pepperdine (2004), Coastal Carolina (2005), East Tennessee State (2006), Lamar (2007) and Wake Forest (2008).
Coastal Carolina will play in three fall tournaments, including return trips to the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Invitational and CordeValle Collegiate. The spring will be busy for the Chants as they will compete in seven events prior to the 2008 Big South Conference Championship. The squad will make its way across the country to play in the Arizona Invitaitonal in Tucson, the Barona Cup in San Diego, Calif. and the Desert Shootout in Goodyear, Ariz. as part of their trips to the West Coast. Back on this side of the United States, Coastal Carolina will again compete at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., the Mercedes Benz Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. and the Administaff Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
Following the Big South Conference Championships, the Chants look to return to the NCAA Regionals and work to advance to their fourth NCAA Championship in five years. This year, the NCAA Championship will be played at the Inverness Golf Club in Toledo, Ohio, a course that the Chanticleers played back at the start of the 2005-06 season when they competed in the Inverness Intercollegiate.
“Thanks to the support of our community and administration, we continue to have the opportunity to play a national schedule," Terrell commented. "The 2008-2009 schedule will enable us to play many different lineups with the hope of having an experienced team by post season. Our team wants to play the best competition they can. This schedule definitely ranks as one of the toughest.”
The 2008-09 slate opens Oct. 5-6 at the Windon Memorial Classic at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill. The Chanticleers return four starters from the five-straight Big South Championship squad and welcome back redshirt senior and All-Region golfer Zack Byrd, who returns from an injury last year.
