Men's Golfers Byrd and Renolds Fall in the Second Round of the U.S. Amateur Public Links

Coastal Carolina University men's golfers Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) and Lindsay Renolds (Hilton Head, S.C./Heritage Academy) both fell in their second-round matches in the 81st United States Amateur Public Links, played at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash July 13.  Byrd fell to Florida State golfer Matt Savage in 20 holes, while Renolds fell to Daniel Im, who plays his college golf at UCLA, 4 and 2.

Byrd did not trail in the match until the conclusion, leading as much as 3-up after 11 holes.  Byrd won the first, third, fourth and seventh holes and went 2-up at number 10 with a par.  Byrd parred 11 to take a 3-up lead, but bogeyed the 12th and13th to see his lead shrink to 1-up.  A birdie by Savage at 14 knotted the match, and the two would tie the next four holes, sending the match to extra holes.  Both players parred the 19th hole, but a double bogey by Byrd at the 20th hole ended his run.

Renolds could not overcome the hot start of Im, who birdied three of the first four holes to take a 2-up lead.  A birdie on seven gave Im a 4-up lead.  Renolds eagled the ninth hole to trim the advantage to 3-up, but that would be as close as he would come.  Im parred the 16th hole for the 4 and 2 win.
