CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina's men's golfers continue to impress in their play in various amateur tournaments this summer. Redshirt sophomore Drew Ernst tied for third at the Southeastern Amateur while senior Sam Lyons qualified for the 2009 USGA Amateur Public Links Championship.
Ernst posted a four-round total of 8-under 276 at the par-71 Country Club of Columbus (Ga.), June 18-21, with three of the four rounds of 68 or better. Derek Chang won the individual title at 16-under, seven shots better than runner-up Wade Binfield.
Lyons finished second at the qualifier at Bryan Park Golf Club in Browns Summit, N.C., shooting a 142 to finish five shots behind medalist Robert Hoadley, who will attend UNC Greensboro next year. Four players from the qualifier advanced to the 156-person field at next month's championship, being played July 13-18 at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. Two rounds of stroke play will be played on July 13 and 14 before a cut to 64 players and the beginning of match play.
The U.S. Amateur Public Links is open to amateur golfers who have been bona fide public course players since Jan. 1 of the current championship year and have not held privileges of any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public or privileges of any private club maintaining its own course and hold a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 4.4.
