CONWAY, S.C. -- Coastal Carolina's men's golf program has two players that have qualified for the 2006 U.S. Amateur Public Links Golf Championship, to be played at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Washington, July 10-15. The field consists of 144 players that qualified around the United States, with foreign players allowed to qualify, that will compete in 36 holes of medal play to advance to a 64-player Match Play bracket.
Fresh off his third place finish in the North Carolina Amateur, junior-to-be Zack Byrd was the runner-up by one shot in the Sectional at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C. Byrd fired a two-round total of 140 to finish just behind Robert Riesen of Pinehurst, N.C. at 139 and three shots ahead of the other qualifier from the sectional, Rocky Manning of Greensboro, N.C. Junior-to-be Lindsay Renolds also was the runner-up in his sectional at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane, Wash., where only two qualifiers advanced. Renolds shot 136 for the two rounds to finish three shots behind medalist Derek Berg of Duvall, Wash.
This marks the first time that Coastal has had two players qualify for the event in the same year.
