Men's Golf's Byrd Picks Up Second All-American Honor

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University men’s golfer Zack Byrd earned his second All-America honor as he was named to Golfweek's Third Team All-America squad, the publication announced. He previously was named a Third Team Division I PING All-American, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Byrd was a unanimous Golfer of the Year selection by the head coaches after leading the Big South in scoring average, finishing the year at 72.03 strokes per round.  Byrd returned from an injury last season to post win Big South medalist honors, post four runner-up finishes this year and six overall top 10 finishes. This spring alone he averaged 70.11 strokes per round, finished 4-under par for the entire spring including the postseason, finishing in the top three in five and the top 20 in all seven of eight events.  He finished the year ranked No. 26 in the nation by Golfweek  and No. 27 by Golfstat. He scored under par in 16 of his 33 rounds this season.  Byrd also has eight rounds in the 60s, including a League-best and school-record 63, which he recorded in the final round of the Desert Shootout en route to a 15-under 201.  He also finished 7-under par at the Arizona Intercollegiate, 5-under par at the Administaff ASU Invitational, and 1-under par at the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges. The 2005 Big South Freshman of the Year and 2005 Championship Medalist, Byrd was the sixth consecutive Chanticleer to win Men’s Golfer of the Year honors.

The redshirt-senior was also the Big South Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s golf, as he graduated with a  3.27 GPA in recreation and sports management. He was now a three-time Men’s Golf All-Academic team member and was just the second Golfer of the Year to be voted Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joining Winthrop’s Kyle Christman in 2002.
