Coastal Carolina’s men’s golf program has been well represented across the nation this week, with three players competing in significant tournaments. Former CCU golfer Dustin Johnson made the cut at the 2008 U.S. Open, while current players Tripp McAllister and Zack Byrd are making an impact in their respective state amateur tournaments.
Playing at Torrey Pines Golf Club in San Diego, Calif. after making it through sectional qualifying in an 11-for-7 playoff, Johnson shot an opening round 3-over 74 and followed it with a 1-over 72 on Friday to finish the first 36 holes at 4-over 146 and make it to the weekend. His second round was up and down, as he had an eagle, two birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey as part of his 72. Stuart Appleby was the 36-hole leader at 3-under 139.
McAllister captured medalist honors in the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship with a 7-under 135 and has advanced to the quarterfinals at Spring Valley Country Club in Columbia, S.C., June 11-15. His second round 67 included three birdies and an eagle on his first five holes which helped him claim the #2 seed, as the defending champion is automatically the top seed. In his two matches on Friday, McAllister easily dispatched of Cooper Tinsley of Greenwood, 5 & 3, and Richard Burgess, Jr. of Roebuck 5&4. McAllister will play his quarterfinal match starting at 8:16, as he takes on Kevin Hester of Blythewood. The defending champion, Warren Thomas, was ousted in the Round of 16.
Byrd is currently in second after 36 holes of the 48th North Carolina Amateur Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Raleigh Country Club in Raleigh, NC on Friday, June 13, 2008 (6808 yards, par 36-35—71). Byrd has a two-round total of 3-under 139, trailing University of North Carolina rising sophomore Kevin O’Connell of Cary at 136 following O’Connell’s 6-under 65 in the second round. Of the 149 players in the field, only seven have managed to be under par on the Donald Ross course, as the cut fell at 9-over 151, leaving 66 players for the final two rounds Saturday and Sunday.
