OWINGS MILLS, MD. Coastal Carolinas mens golf team fired a four-over 284 in the opening round to sit in a tie for fourth at the 2005 NCAA Mens Golf Championship, June 1. The tournament is being contested at Caves Valley Golf Club (Par 70 - 7,131 yards) in Owings Mills, Md.
Coastal went out in the first wave this morning with the teams seeded 16-30 in the event and shot the second best round of the grouping, finishing just two shots behind playing partners Arizona. However, the afternoon groups found the course no friendlier, as Georgia shot a six-under 274 for a five-shot lead over Tennessee, eight over Arizona and 10 over CCU and second-seeded UNLV.
Coastal sophomore Dustin Johnson, the Big South Player of the Year and NCAA East Regional medalist, led the Chanticleers and was tied for 14th overall with a one-under 69. Freshman Lindsay Renolds was tied for 33rd at one-over 71, while sophomore Moises Cobo and freshman Zack Byrd were tied for 49th at two-over 72.
CCU will return to the course Thu., June 2 at 12:45 p.m. in a pairing with Arizona and SMU in the second round of the four-round championship. Following the third round on Fri., June 3, the field will be pared down to the top 15 teams.
