ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Coastal Carolina senior Sebastian Soderberg was named PING/Golf Coaches Association of America Division I All-East Region. The Ojersjo, Sweden, native is currently at the NCAA Championship, leading the Chanticleers to their fourth berth to the final and first since 2007. However, this is Soderberg's second appearance at the NCAA Championship as he qualified as an individual in 2011.
This marks the third All-East Region honor for Soderberg, who becomes the only Chanticleer to be a three-time PING/GCAA all-region pick. He is just the third Chant to be an all-region pick, joining Dustin Johnson (2006) and Zack Byrd (2007 and '09).
Soderberg, who was the 2013 Big South Player of the Year, was among the final 15 European players to be considered for this year's Palmer Cup. He averaged 72.31 strokes per round this season - fifth on the CCU single-season list, was a two-time Big South Player of the Week and won the prestigious Augusta State Insperity Invitational. In 13 events, he placed among the top 10 10 times, including seven top five finishes. During a stretch this spring, Soderberg reeled off a seventh-place finish. fifth-place finish, two runner-up finishes, medalist honors, a seventh-place finish and a runner-up finish. Also, in 36 rounds this season, Soderberg had 17 at par or better, including six rounds in the 60's.
Soderberg became the third Chanticleer to be a four-time All-Big South selection, joining Brad Hastings and Johnson, and joined Byrd as Coastal's only two student-athletes to be a three-time Academic All-Big South honoree.
Soderberg has a career stroke average of 73.48 to rank third on the CCU all-time list behind Johnson (72.11) and Alvaro Velasco (72.77).
