Men's Golf Qualifies for NCAA Championships

Chanticleers to make their first-ever appearance after a tie for eighth

More Information:

NASHVILLE, TENN. – Coastal Carolina shot their best round of the tournament and moved up five spots in the final 18 holes to tie for eighth at the NCAA East Regional and qualify for the 2005 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships. The three-round East Regional was contested at the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville, Tenn. The top 10 teams and top two individuals not on a qualifying team will play in the 2005 NCAA Championships at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Md., Wed.-Sat., June 1-4, with CCU making its first-ever appearance in the final event.

Wake Forest won the team title with a 54-hole total of 17-under 835 to defeat runner-up Tennessee by two shots. Coastal entered the final round in a tie for 13th, just two shots out of the top 10 teams to qualify. However, the Chanticleers fired a team 276, the second-best score of the day and just two shots off the school record, to move up five places in the final standings. CCU finished at 849 for the event, the second-best 54-hole total in school history.

Coastal sophomore Dustin Johnson, the Big South Player of the Year, took home medalist honors with a 15-under 198, setting a new school record by seven shots and becoming the first Chanticleer ever to finish below 200 in a 54-hole event. He shot a seven-under 64 in the final round, eclipsing his two-day old school record of 65 he posted in the opening round of the regional. Freshman Brad Robinson was next for CCU, tying for 57th at four-over 217, after a final round 68.

The Golf Channel will air the June 2-4 NCAA Championships. The final three rounds of the tournament will air each day from 3 – 5 p.m. ET. Hosting the men’s coverage will be Brian Anderson and Curt Byrum, with Steve Burkowski reporting from the course and handling interviews.
