Men's Golf Advances To NCAA Championships After Winning Four-Hole Playoff Over Clemson at NCAA East Regional

More Information:

ALPHARETTA, GA. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf team slipped three spots in the final round but found a way to win a four-hole playoff and the 10th and final qualifying spot out of the 2007 NCAA East Regional, May 19. The 54-hole event, hosted by Georgia Tech, was played at the Golf Club of Georgia (Par 72 - 7,017 yards) in Alpharetta, Ga., May 17-19. The top 10 teams, including Coastal, and two individuals not on advancing teams move on to the NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2, at Golden Horseshoe Country Club in Williamsburg, Va.

Clemson and Coastal Carolina had tied for 10th place at 884 strokes after regulation play, setting up the playoff for the final spot out of the region to advance to the NCAAs. Coastal and Clemson battled for 2 1/2 hours in the team playoff, with the low four scores counting on each hole. The Tigers failed to make a birdie on any of the four holes, setting the stage for the Chanticleers. Sophomore Cameron Hooper, who had struggled with an 82 earlier in the day as the non-counting member for Coastal, sank the winning birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to send the Chanticleers to their third straight NCAA Championship appearance. Top-ranked Georgia won the regional with a nine-under 855, 12 shots better than runners-up Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech.

Senior All-American Dustin Johnson posted his second straight under-par round, shooting a two-under 70 to finish at one-under 215, good for a tie for eighth. Johnson has now posted a top 10 finish in all but one team event this season. Junior Lindsay Renolds tied for 19th at 219, while freshman Dan Obremski was next for the Chants in a tie for 56th at 225.

Last year, the Chanticleers finished in a tie for 15th at the NCAA Championships, falling in a team playoff to Brigham Young to advance to the fourth and final round. In 2005 in the program's first appearance in school history at the NCAA Championships, Coastal tied for 20th.
