ALPHARETTA, GA. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf team made the biggest move up the leaderboard of the day, advancing six spots to seventh after two rounds of the 2007 NCAA East Regional, May 18. The 54-hole event, hosted by Georgia Tech, is being played at the Golf Club of Georgia (Par 72 - 7,017 yards) in Alpharetta, Ga., May 17-19. The top 10 teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on to the NCAA Championships, May 30-June 2, at Golden Horseshoe Country Club in Williamsburg, Va.
The Chanticleers slashed 10 shots off their opening round score in the second round, posting a two-over 290 to move up from a tie for 13th to seventh at 590. Top-ranked Georgia currently leads at two-under 574, but the key for Coastal is the margin to remain in the top 10 after three rounds, where CCU holds a three-shot advantage over UCF and Georgia State heading into Saturday's final round.
CCU is led by senior All-American Dustin Johnson and junior Lindsay Renolds, who are each tied for 11th at one-over 145. Johnson rebounded after an opening round 76, which had him tied for 68th, with a three-under 69 in the second 18, just one of five players to break 70 in the second round. He posted six birdies with just one miscued hole, a triple bogey on the par-four 15th, for the three-under score. Renolds was also under par, shooting a one-under 71 with four birdies and three bogeys. Of the five CCU players, four of them improved their scores in the second trip around the Golf Club of Georgia's Par 72 course.
The leaders go off early in the final round, so the Chanticleers will go out in the second wave off the No. 1 tee, starting at 7:47 a.m. and playing with North Carolina and Florida State.
