ORLANDO, FLA. The Coastal Carolina mens golf team struggled through the opening round and currently stands in 17th at the NCAA East Regional, May 18. The 54-hole tournament is being played at the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando, Fla.
The first round was played under sunny, but windy conditions. Three teams broke par and 14 players among the field of 141 finished under par. The Chanticleers posted a 301 in the first round with just seven shots separating them from seventh. Top-seeded Georgia leads with a four-under 284, with Wake Forest one shot behind in second with a 285 and UNLV in third at one-under 287.
Individually, Jonathan Jackson of North Carolina fired a six-under 66 to lead Georgias Brendon Todd by one shot. Defending East Region medalist junior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C./Dutch Fork) of Coastal is tied for 10th at one-under 71, with sophomore Joachim Fourquet (Bourdeaux, France/Lycee St. Genes) the next CCU player at three-over 75, tied for 53rd.
Friday's second round tee times begin at 7 a.m. The top-10 squads in the 27-team field, plus two individuals not on those teams, advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins May 31 in Sunriver, Ore.
