GALLOWAY, N.J. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf squad battled all of the elements and is tied for 11th after the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Northeast Regional, May 14. The three-day, 54-hole event is being contested at Galloway National Golf Club (Par 71 - 7,022 yards) in Galloway, N.J.
On an extremely windy day off the shores of Reeds Bay in Galloway, N.J., the entire field battled the tough course, tough course conditions and the wind, as no teams broke par and only one player shot even-par individually. The No. 8-seeded Chanticleers struggled in the conditions and shot a 319 to sit in a tie for 11th with Penn State. Tennessee leads at 296, one shot better than Wake Forest. The good news is that the Chants are just 12 shots out the fifth and final advancing spot after the first round, staying in range for the final 36 holes.
Coastal Carolina redshirt-senior Zack Byrd led the effort, as he is tied for 18th with a 5-over 76. Redshirt-freshman Drew Ernst is next in a tie for 27th at 78, while junior Dan Obremski is next at 81, tied for 50th. Junior Sam Lyons is 64th at 84, while sophomore Tripp McAllister rounds out the scoring in a tie for 68th at 87.
The Chanticleers, who will play the second round with Penn State and VCU, will go off the No. 10 tee, starting at 9:20.
