Men's Golf's McAllister Named Big South Freshman and Player of the Year

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Coastal Carolina freshman Tripp McAllister was voted the 2007-08 Big South Men’s Golfer and Freshman of the Year by the League’s head coaches and sports information directors, it was announced Sunday evening at the League’s annual men’s golf awards banquet.   McAllister is the first men’s golfer in Big South history to be named both Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. He was second in the Big South with a 73.55 stroke average. The highest-ranked individual in the Conference this season, McAllister was Coastal’s top finisher in four events and finished in the top 30 in all but one event playing the second-toughest schedule in the country. He was named Big South Golfer of the Week twice (Feb. 21 and March 27) and posted three rounds in the 60s, including the third-lowest individual round this season (69). McAllister carded a 1-under 209 at the SunTrust Gator Invitational to finish tied for 12th – his season best. He received eight of the 12 first-place votes from the panel for 48 out of a possible 60 points for Player of the Year, and received all 12 first-place votes for Freshman of the Year. McAllister is the fifth consecutive Coastal Carolina men’s golfer to be voted Player of the Year since the League began recognizing its top golfer based on regular-season play in 2004. He also is Coastal’s third Freshman of the Year selection and first since Zack Byrd in 2005.   The Big South also announced five of its All-Conference honorees at the banquet. These selections are based on regular-season play and feature McAllister and Coastal Carolina teammate Dan Obremski, as well as Radford duo Nick Little and Hampton Ballard, and Liberty’s Nathan Schenz-Davis. The remaining All-Conference members will consist of the top five finishers (and any additional ties) in the Championship not among those named already.   The 2008 Big South Men’s Golf Championship begins Monday, April 21 with the first and second rounds (36 holes), beginning at 8:00am and will be contested at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety-Six, S.C. The 54-hole event concludes Tuesday, April 22 at 8:00am, with the champion receiving the Big South’s automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.   2008 Big South Conference Men’s Golf Award Winners   All-Conference                                                                                    Tripp McAllister, Coastal Carolina Nick Little, Radford Nathan Schenz-Davis, Liberty Dan Obremski, Coastal Carolina Hampton Ballard, Radford                                                                                                                 Academic All-Conference Herve Gevers, Charleston Southern Lindsay Renolds, Coastal Carolina Marc Issler, High Point Jay Calvo, Liberty Patrick Coleman, Presbyterian Pete Alminas, Winthrop   Golfer of the Year Tripp McAllister, Coastal Carolina   Freshman of the Year Tripp McAllister, Coastal Carolina   Coach of the Year Michael Grant, Radford   Scholar-Athlete of the Year Pete Alminas, Winthrop
