Coastal Carolina shot 300 as a team Wednesday and captured the 2005 PUPS Big South Men's Golf Championship with a three-day total 857, 7-under par and 35 shots ahead of second-place Charleston Southern. With the win, the Chanticleers earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals, with the site to be either Nashville, Tenn., South Bend, Ind. or Stanford, Calif., May 19-21.
Charleston Southern finished four shots ahead of third-place Liberty (896), while Winthrop finished fourth at 900. Radford ended at fifth at 904, while Birmingham-Southern moved ahead of High Point for sixth-place (909). High Point shot a 316 Wednesday to finish in seventh at 913.
Medalist honors went to Coastal Carolina's and Big South Freshman of the Year Zack Byrd, who carded a 5-under 211. Teammate Dustin Johnson and Radford's Aaron Summers tied for runner-up at 1-under 215, while CCU's Lindsay Renolds holed out at an even par 216.
Individuals making the All-Conference team based on Championship play include Byrd, Renolds, High Point's Matthew Hammond and Winthrop's Steve Alminas and Luke Elfner.
Wednesday highlights include Coastal's Moises Cobo's hole-in-one on the No. 4 hole and Liberty's Eric Klinger recording an eagle on No. 18 for the second time in three days.
