NINETY SIX, S.C. – Coastal Carolina’s Zack Byrd and Lindsay Renolds each carded a 5-under 67 Tuesday afternoon to help the Chanticleers pull to a 34-shot lead after two rounds of the 2005 PUPS Big South Men’s Golf Championship, being contested at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C.  Coastal Carolina posted a 14-under 274 aggregate team score Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 557 – 19-under par and 34 shots ahead of second-place Charleston Southern (591).  Byrd’s round was a career-best and moved him into first-place with a 7-under 137 (70-67).

Coastal’s Dustin Johnson fired a 68 to move into second overall at 4-under 140 (62-78).  Chanticleer Brad Robinson is third at 3-under 141, while Radford’s Aaron Summers (2-under 142), High Point’s Matthew Hammond and Renolds (both 1-under 143) round out the players shooting under par for the tournament.  Tuesday’s action saw Byrd birdie five holes and par the rest; Renolds’ eagle on the 527-yard, par-5 No. 8 hole; and Birmingham-Southern’s Neil Self recording an eagle on the 329-yard, par-4 No. 6 hole.

Winthrop shot the second-lowest round of the day with a 292, moving into a three-way tie with High Point and Radford for fourth-place at 597.  Radford shot a 293 Tuesday and High Point fired a 299.  The Buccaneers moved ahead of Liberty with a 295 Tuesday, while the Flames carded a 298 to stand at 593, two shots behind CSU.  Birmingham-Southern remains in seventh-place with a two-day total of 607.

Coastal’s 274 establishes a Big South Championship single-round record, besting the previous low of 278 set in 1985 by Columbus and a new CCU record, surpassing the previous record of 276 set at the UNCW/Belvedere Invitational's first round on Oct. 5, 1998. The Chanticleers also are on pace to break the 54-hole Championship record of 851, which they set in 1999.  The Conference record for largest margin of victory is 36 shots, set by Augusta in 1990.

Final round action of the 2005 PUPS Big South Men’s Golf Championship begins at 8:30am ET Wednesday and is free and open to the public.
