Men's Golf Captures 2007 PUPS Big South Conference Championship

    ONEONTA, ALA. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf squad wrapped up a wire-to-wire, 23-shot victory at the 2007 PUPS Big South Conference Golf Championship, Apr. 18. The 54-hole, three-day tournament was played at Limestone Springs Golf Club (Par 72 - 6,987 Yards) in Oneonta, Ala., Apr. 16-18. It was Coastal's ninth Big South title in the last 11 years.

Also ranked as the top team in Region 3-North, the top-seeded Chanticleers shot the best round of the tournament for their final 18, firing a six-under 282 to finish at two-over 866, 23 shots ahead of runner-up Winthrop at 889. Charleston Southern was third at 891.

Senior Dustin Johnson (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Dutch Fork) fired a tournament low 66 in the final round to dominate the field with a 204 for an 11-shot victory. The total of 204 and the 12-under score are both Big South Championship records for 54-hole total and under-par, respectively. It was also the largest margin of victory by an individual in Big South Championship play. Junior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) tied for third at three-over 219, while freshman Sam Lyons (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) placed ninth at 223 after firing a personal-best two-under 70 in the last 18. Lyons play earned him All-Big South honors after finishing among the top five players not already honored with All-Big South selection by the voters. Freshman Dan Obremski (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) tied for 10th at 224 and junior Lindsay Renolds (Christina Lake, B.C./Heritage (S.C.) Academy) rounded out CCU's squad in a tie for 12th at 225.

The Chants earned the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals and now await the announcement Mon., May 7 of the location of their regional to be played May 17-19. This year's NCAA Championships will be contested at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va., May 30-June 2.
