Coastal Men's Golf Men's Golf Moves Into Lead After Two Rounds of PUPS/PDPS Big South Championship
NINETY SIX, S.C. -- Top-seeded and two-time defending Big South Conference champion Coastal Carolina shot a tournament-best 288 in the second round and surged into the lead through two rounds of the 2006 PUPS/PDPS Big South Mens Golf Championship. The tournament is being held at The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 7,001 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C., with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Coming off 301 in the first round under very blustery conditions in the final nine holes, the Chanticleers took advantage of perfect conditions to fire an even-par 288, the best round of the day by five shots. Coastal now stands at 589, nine shots better than Charleston Southern in second at 598. Second-seeded Radford was the leader after the opening round at 297, but shot 313 on the second 18 to fall all the way to last.
Coastal Carolina teammates junior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C./Dutch Fork) and junior Moises Cobo (Seville, Spain/Pendleton School (Fla.)) both shot even-par 72 in the second round and are tied for fourth at 146. Freshman Cameron Hooper (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) shot a 74 and is tied for ninth at 149. Sophomore Joachim Fourquet (Bourdeaux, France/Lycee St. Genes) shot the best round of the day for Coastal with a two-under 70 and is now 12th at 150 entering the final round.
Final round action will begin Wednesday, April 19 at 8 am ET with Liberty and Radford teeing off between 8:00-8:36am on hole No. 10. Winthrop and Birmingham-Southern will tee off hole No. 1 between 8:00-8:36am, while Coastal, Charleston Southern and High Point will tee off No. 1 from 8:45-9:21. Following the round, the Big South will honor the team champion, team runner-up, individual medalist, individual runner-up and the remaining members of the All-Conference team based on championship play.
