NINETY SIX, SC Coastal Carolina shot a five-under team score of 283 to take a commanding 12-shot lead after day one of the 2005 PUPS Big South Mens Golf Championship held at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C. The Chanticleers entered the tournament as the defending seed and top seed for this season's championship.
Liberty stands in second-place at 295, just one stroke ahead of Charleston Southern (296). The Buccaneers are two strokes ahead of High Point (298), while the Panthers are six strokes ahead of fifth-place Radford (304). The Highlanders are one shot in front of Winthrop (305), and the Eagles are three shots ahead of seventh-place Birmingham-Southern (308).
Coastal freshman Brad Johnson carded the lowest round of the day with a career-best 68 (-4). He notched eight birdies four on the front nine and four on the back nine and had pars seven of his remaining 10 holes. Teammate Zack Byrd, the Big Souths Freshman of the Year, stands in second-place with a 2-under 70, while fellow Chanticleer and Big South Mens Golfer of the Year Dustin Johnson is tied for third following an even-par 72. Also tied with Johnson for third are Radfords Aaron Summers, High Points Matthew Hammond and Charleston Southerns Paul Gagliardi.
The 2005 PUPS Big South Mens Golf Championship continues with second round action Tuesday, April 19 at 8:30am ET, while the final round is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday, April 20.
