NINETY SIX, S.C. -- Top-seeded and two-time defending Big South Conference champion Coastal Carolina is third after the opening round of the 2006 PUPS/PDPS Big South Mens Golf Championship. The tournament is being held at The Patriot Club at Grand Harbor (par 72, 7001 yards) in Ninety Six, S.C., with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals. Coastal has already qualified for the regionals, based on being ranked sixth in the NCAA's South Region.s
The Chanticleers shot 301 in the first round under very blustery conditions in the final nine holes. Second-seeded Radford is the current leader at 297, while seventh-seeded High Point is in second at 299.
Coastal Carolina teammates junior Dustin Johnson (Lexington, S.C./Dutch Fork) and junior Moises Cobo (Seville, Spain/Pendleton School (Fla.)) are tied for seventh at 74. Freshman Cameron Hooper (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny) is one stroke behind his teammates, tied for 10th. Charleston Southern junior Shawn Hall carded a 1-under 71 for the lowest round of the day, holding a one-shot lead after 18 holes.
Second round action will begin Tuesday, April 18 at 8:00am ET with Winthrop and Birmingham-Southern teeing off between 8:00-8:36am. CSU and Libery will tee from 8:45-9:21, while Radford, High Point and Coastal will begin play at 9:30am. The final round is scheduled to conclude on Wednesday.
