CONWAY - Coastal Carolina senior Sebastian Soderberg was named the Big South Men's Golfer of the Week for the second time this spring as he won the prestigious Insperity Augusta State Invitational, an event that featured 12 of the nation's top 50 programs.
Soderberg, who led the field with 17 birdies over three rounds, shot a modest 75 in the opening round, but turned in a second-round, 4-under par 68 later that day to stand in a tie for 11th. Soderberg finished with a 6-under 66 in the final round for a 54-hole total of 209.
However, Soderberg would have to play five more holes and he out-dueled UCF's Greg Eason (70-70-69=209) to win playoff. Soderberg and Eason, a consensus top 30 player, both birdied the first playoff hole then made three straight pars. On the fifth time playing hole 18, Soderberg hit five iron and then hit wedge just off the back of the green. However, he was able to sink a 15-footer for birdie to win.
This marks the second career win for Soderberg, who won the 2012 Furman Intercollegiate with scores of 68-68-68=204, and he becomes the second Chanticleer to win the Augusta State Invitational, joining Dustin Johnson in 2007. This additionally marks Soderberg's fourth straight top 10 finish of the spring, tying for seventh, fifth and second twice, respectively.
On Sunday, Soderberg set the tone early, getting a birdie on the second hole and getting to 3-under after birdies on hole eight. He bounced back to birdie the par five ninth to make the turn at 3-under. He reeled off birdies on holes 11, 13, 15 and 17 but would bogey the par 4 18th for his 66. The 66 is his second best career round, shooting 65 in the second round last week at Florida State, and ties for the seventh-best round in CCU history.
Soderberg is closing is senior season in a similar fashion to that of Johnson. Soderberg has played in 10 events in his senior season and posted eight top 10's, including six top five finishes. Johnson played in 11 events prior to the Big South Championship his senior season and posted nine to p10 finishes, including five in the top five with three wins.
Coastal Carolina will play in one event - traveling to Greenville this Saturday to face Furman and Tennessee in a tri-meet - before closing the regular season at the Big South Championship April 21-23 in Ninety Six at the Patriot Golf Club.
