Men's Golf Comes From Behind To Win Administaff Augusta State Invitational

        AUGUSTA, GA. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf squad put together a furious rally over the last 10 holes to defend its team title at the 2007 Administaff Augusta State Invitational, Mar. 30-Apr. 1. The tournament was played at the Champions Retreat Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,301 yards) in Augusta, Ga.

The Chanticleers entered the final round trailing by nine shots to first and second round leader North Carolina. CCU fell behind 15 shots through the first eight holes of the final round but mounted a furious rally, going 10-under over the last 10 holes as a team to the team title by one shot, firing an 11-under 853 for the event, with the Tar Heels finishing at 854. Georgia State was third at 856, with South Carolina in fourth at 861. Coastal fired under-par rounds as a team in all three rounds of the tournament.

Senior Dustin Johnson (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Dutch Fork) took home medalist honors in dominating fashion, shooting a 12-under 204 for the tournament (four-under 68 in each round) and winning by six shots over Houston's Jordan Irwin, George Bryan IV of South Carolina and North Carolina's Reed Darsie. Johnson was a key part of the late rally for CCU, as he was three-over for eight holes on Sunday and had five birdies, one eagle and no bogeys in the final 10 holes (seven-under), including birdies on the 16th and 18th holes when Coastal and UNC were tied, while playing partner Darsie could only manage a birdie on the 17th. Freshman Dan Obremski (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford ) tied for 12th at one-under 215, with a pair of under par rounds in the tournament, while junior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) shot even-par 216 for the 54 holes, good for a tie for 24th.

The Chanticleers are next on the course to defend their Big South Conference title at the 2007 PUPS Big South Conference Men's Golf Championship, Mon.-Wed., Apr. 16-18 at Limestone Springs Golf Course in Oneonta, Ala.
