EVANS, GA. -- The Coastal Carolina men's golf squad is in second place after the first round of the Administaff Augusta State Invitational, Mar. 30. The 54-hole, three-day event is being contested at Champions Retreat Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,301 Yards) in Evans, Ga.
Rebounding from a disappointing seventh-place finish at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Collegiate Invitational just three days ago, the Chanticleers fired a six-under 282 in the first round and trail first-round leader North Carolina by three shots. Tennessee is in third at 283, with South Carolina posting a 289 to sit in fourth.
Senior Dustin Johnson had seven birdies but triple bogeyed the last hole to shoot a four-under 68 and is in a tie for third with Reed Darsie and Robert Riesen, both of North Carolina. Junior Zack Byrd and freshman Dan Obremski are tied for sixth after each posted a three-under 69 through 18 holes. George Bryan IV of South Carolina is the current leader with a six-under 66, while Tennessee's Jonathan Mount is one shot behind in second.
CCU will start the second round, Sat., Mar. 31 at 9:30 a.m., going off the No. 1 tee with playing partners North Carolina and Tennessee.
