Men's Golf Finishes Third at Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz.The Coastal Carolina University men’s golf team fired its third straight under-par round but fell off the pace, finishing third at the 2009 Desert Shootout, March 19-21. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Denver, was played at Palm Valley Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,015 yards) in Goodyear, Ariz.       

      After shooting a pair of rounds under 280, the Chanticleers posted their third straight under-par round with a 5-under 283 to finish at a school-record 28-under 838. Host Denver won the team title with a 54-hole total of 829, one shot better than runner-up Tulsa and nine shots ahead of Coastal Carolina. Overall, 10 of the 14 teams posted under-par scores for the tournament.

      Redshirt senior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) posted his fourth runner-up and sixth top-20 finish of the year, shooting a school-record 9-under 63 in the final round to move up to tie for second with Tulsa's Nicolas Geyger at 15-under 201. The three-round total of 201 ties for the second best 54-hole score in program history. Tom Whitney of Air Force took home medalist honors with a 16-under 200.

      Junior Sam Lyons (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had his second top-10 and third top-20 finish of the year as he tied for ninth at 6-under 209. Redshirt freshman Drew Ernst (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) and sophomore Tripp McAllister (Lake City, S.C./The Carolina Academy) also finished the event under par for the team, as both tied for 33rd at 1-under 215. Junior Dan Obremski (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) rounded out the Chanticleers' team effort in a tie for 42nd at 1-over 217.

      Individually, sophomore David Dannelly (Easley, S.C./Easley) tied for 27th at 2-under 215. with freshman Charlie Winegardner (Lothian, Md./Calverton School) shooting two under-par rounds during the tournament and finishing in a tie for 37th at even-par 216. Sophomore Alan Lee (Lima, Peru/Heritage Academy (Arkansas)) was the final Chant, placing 57th at 4-over 220.

            Coastal Carolina returns to the course Saturday-Sunday, April 4-5 at the Administaff/Augusta State Invitational at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
