Men's Golf Moves Up To Second After 36 Holes of Desert Shootout

   GOODYEAR, Ariz.The Coastal Carolina University men’s golf team continued their impressive play and moved up to second after the first two rounds of the 2009 Desert Shootout, March 20. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Denver, is being played at Palm Valley Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,015 yards) in Goodyear, Ariz.       

      After shooting an 10-under 278 in the first round, the Chanticleers improved on it in the second round with an 11-under 277 to move up from third to second with a 36-hole score of 21-under 555. Host Denver also shot an 11-under 277 in its second round and holds a six-shot lead entering Saturday's final round with a score of 28-under 548. Tulsa is in third at 21-under 556. Of the 14 teams in the field, nine of the squads are under par through 36 holes.

      All eight Coastal Carolina players, with five team members and three individuals, are under par through the first two rounds. The Chants are led by junior Sam Lyons (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) as he shot a 7-under 65 in the second round and is at 10-under 134 in second place, one shot behind Air Force's Tom Whitney. Redshirt senior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) is next for the team in a tie for eighth at 6-under 138 after his second consecutive 69. Redshirt freshman Drew Ernst (Seneca, S.C./Seneca) is tied for 24th at 3-under 141, while sophomore Tripp McAllister (Lake City, S.C./The Carolina Academy) is two shots back in a tie for 36th with junior Dan Obremski (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) at 1-under 143.

      Individually, freshman Charlie Winegardner (Lothian, Md./Calverton School) is making the most of the event, as he is currently in fourth at 8-under 136, following a second-round 3-under 69. Sophomore David Dannelly (Easley, S.C./Easley) is tied for 24th at 3-under 141, while sophomore Alan Lee (Lima, Peru/Heritage Academy (Arkansas)) rebounded from an opening round 74, shooting a 4-under 68 in his second round to sit in a tie for 30th at 2-under 142.

      Coastal Carolina is going off the first three holes in the final round shotgun start, playing with Denver, Tulsa and Kansas at 7:30 a.m. Arizona time.
