Men's Golf In Third After First Round of Desert Shootout

GOODYEAR, Ariz. --  The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team fired a season-best 278 in the first round and is tied for third at the 2009 Desert Shootout, Mar. 19. The three-day, 54-hole tournament, hosted by the University of Denver, is being played at Palm Valley Golf Club (Par 72 - 7,015 yards) in Goodyear, Ariz.

The Chanticleers came out and posted all five team players under par in the opening 18, finishing with a 10-under 278 to sit in a tie for third with Air Force and Southern Utah. Host Denver leads at 17-under 271 with Tulsa in second at 275. In all, 10 of the 14 teams in the tournament finished the first round under par.

The team effort was led by redshirt senior Zack Byrd and junior Sam Lyons, as each posted a 3-under 69. Redshirt freshman Drew Ernst and junior Dan Obremski each shot a 2-under 70 to sit in a tie for 22nd, while sophomore Tripp McAllister had a 1-under 71 and is tied for 30th. The Chants also have three individuals in the tournament, as freshman Charlie Winegardner had a 5-under 67 and is tied for third, while sophomore David Dannelly shot a 4-under 68 and is tied for sixth. Sophomore Alan Lee rounded out the Coastal Carolina players in the field with a 2-over 74, putting him in a tie for 57th. Nicolas Geyger of Tulsa and Air Force's Tom Whitney were tied for the first round lead after each shot an 8-under 64.

Coastal Carolina will head back out on the course at 8:20 a.m. Arizona time off No. 1, playing with Denver, Tulsa and Air Force.
