CONWAY, SC The Coastal Carolina University mens golf team continues to make its presence felt in the major national ratings, announced today.
College golf uses three major barometers for rankings -- the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, the GolfWorld/Nike Golf Coaches Poll and the Golfstat ratings. Coastal Carolina is currently No. 6 in the GolfWorld/Nike Golf Coaches Poll as of Feb. 21, up from No. 9 at the end of the fall, No. 7 in the Golfstat ratings and No. 8 in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Ratings Index. The No. 6 ranking is the highest ever for any sport at Coastal Carolina or in the Big South Conference.
The GolfWeek/Sagarin ratings and Golfstat Ratings are both computer indexes based on various performance factors. The GolfWorld/Nike Golf Coaches Poll is voted on by a panel of head coaches at Division I institutions that are also members of the Golf Coaches Association of America and is released every two weeks.
The Chanticleers have two players ranked in the top 20 nationally. Senior Dustin Johnson (Myrtle Beach, S.C./Dutch Fork) is currently ranked 16th in the GolfWeek/Sagarin collegiate ratings and 40th in the Golfstat Cup individual ratings among all levels of collegiate golf. He posted a win at the Duke Classic, finished fourth at the Inverness Intercollegiate and placed second at the International Collegiate. Most recently, he finished third at the John Hayt Collegiate, Feb. 18-20, leading Coastal to a tie for runner-up honors. Junior Zack Byrd (Calabash, N.C./Byrd Academy) is 20th in the ratings. Byrd battled through a foot injury to tie for 18th at the John Hayt Collegiate.
The Chanticleers are next in action at the Ashworth Collegiate Invitational, Mon.-Tue., Mar. 5-6. The tournament is being played at the North Ranch Golf Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
