Luis Ruiz to Play in Latin America Amateur

CONWAY - Coastal Carolina junior golfer Luis Ruiz has been selected to play in the 2018 Latin America Amateur Championship, which will be contested at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile, Jan. 20-23. The winner will be invited to the 2018 Masters and receive exemptions into the final stages of qualifying for The Open and U.S. Open in 2018.

Ruiz is one of eight golfers from his native Mexico selected to play in the 180-player field from 27 Latin American countries. (List of entries: http://www.laacgolf.com/about/entries/)

Ruiz had a strong fall for the Chanticleers, leading the team with a 71.58 scoring average. Of his 12 rounds to date this season, Ruiz has posted eight rounds of par or better, including five rounds in the 60's.

Last year, Ruiz, who led the team in scoring average (73.64), was named second team All-Sun Belt second team, as voted on by the league's head coaches. He tied with three others for low medalist at the 2017 Sun Belt Championship and credited with his first collegiate win before falling in a playoff to officially tie for second for league purposes.

The 2018 Latin America Amateur Championship -- organized by the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the USGA -- will be broadcast on five continents, reaching millions of homes around the world. Ruiz is following in his the footsteps of his brother and former Chanticleer, Alfredo Ruiz, who played in last year's championship.
