Coastal Men's Golf in 8th After Two Rounds at Gifford Collegiate

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team turned in rounds of 295-285 and stands in eighth place after 36 holes at the 10-team Gifford Collegiate, hosted by UCLA and played at the par-70, 6,900-yard Ocean North Course at Pelican Hill Resort.

The event will conclude Tuesday with 18 final holes.

Although the field is small, it is has an NCAA Regional feel, featuring seven of the nation's top 50 teams. Top-ranked Alabama leads the field with a two-round total of 551 (275-276), followed by #37 Northwestern (554), #26 SMU (560), #28 Southern California (560), #18 Washington (561) and #14 UCLA (564). Lamar (571) holds the seventh spot ahead of Coastal, who is followed by #43 Tennessee (582) and Oregon (582).

Senior Roberto Ballesteros, seeing his first action with the team after an off-season injury, leads the Chanticleers. The senior is tied for 16th after posting rounds of 70-71 for a 1-over par 141. In the first round, Ballesteros had 16 pars with a bogey on the 14th hole and a birdie on the ninth for an even par round. In the afternoon session, he had three bogeys versus two birdies for his 1-over par round.

Ben Wheeler went from 38th after 18 holes to 25th after the second round. The junior posted a 4-over 74 in his first round then rallied with a 1-under par 69 later in the day. In the second round, he made the turn at even par thanks to a birdie on eight and bogey on nine. The then bogeyed 10 before answering with a birdie on 11. He fell back to 1-over with a bogey on 14 but finished with birdies on holes 17 and 18 for sixth round of par or better in 11 opportunities this season.

Freshman Alfredo Ruiz also made an impressive second-round charge, moving from 50th into a tie for 39th. He posted an eight-over 78 in the morning session but rallied to shoot even par in the afternoon. He only had seven pars with four bogeys, a double bogey and an impressive six birdies.

Christopher Williams and Andrew Dorn complete the CCU contingent. Williams shot 73-75 and is tied with Ruiz for 39th (148). Dorn is in 55th after rounds of 80-79.
