SAN MARTIN, Calif. - Coastal Carolina, playing in a unique event in which six golfers participate and five scores are counted, stands in 10th place at UCLA's Collegiate at CordeValle Golf Club (par 71 - 7,360 yards). The 11-team event features seven of the nation's top 41 teams.

Southern California, ranked 30th, is the day one leader, posting a 10-under 345. Host and 10th-ranked UCLA is second with a seven-under 348, followed by #36 Virginia (355), #3 Washington (359), #2 Oregon (362), Long Beach State (369), #41 Arizona (370), #5 Stanford (371), Northwestern (372), Coastal Carolina (373) and Washington State (378).

Freshman Peter Valasek leads the Chants, carding a two-over 73 and tying for 25th. Valasek had an interesting front nine. After a birdie and a bogey to stand at even par after four holes, Valasek finished his front nine with a bogey, eagle, bogey, eagle and double bogey for an even-par 36. He reeled off seven pars and bogeys on 14 and 17 to finish two over.

Fellow freshman Andrew Dorn is tied for 31st and one stroke behind Valasek at 74. He offset three bogeys with three birdies to stand at even par through 12 holes before having three straight bogeys on 13, 14 and 15 for his three-over 73.

Senior Charlie Winegardner and freshman Easton Renwick are tied for 41st, each shooting a three-over 75 on Monday. Winegardner posted pars on his first 10 holes, but had bogeys on four on his last eight holes for his 75. Renwick, making his collegiate debut, was five over par through 18, and was the only Chanticleer to birdie the 18th hole for his 75.

Sophomore Roberto Ballesteros is tied for 50th (76), while junior Sebastian Soderberg is tied for 54th (77).

The teams will play 18 holes Tuesday and a final round of 18 holes Wednesday.
