JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shot a 7-over par 295 Saturday and stands in ninth place with a 36-hole total of 580 at the 14-team Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, played at the par-72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Course at The Ridges.
Kent State, ranked 17th nationally, shot a 9-under par 279 to vault into the lead. Virginia Tech, ranked 13th, is two shots off the lead, shooting a 6-under 282 while #14 Virginia carded a 16-under 272 to move into third and just three strokes off the lead with a 567. Rounding out the top 10 includes host and day one leader East Tennessee State (568), UNC Wilmington (572), #48 Tennessee (573), Wake Forest (573), #26 Memphis (576), Coastal Carolina (580) and Furman (584).
Individually for the Chanticleers, Andrew Dorn moved up five spots by shooting a 3-under par 69. The junior posted a 71 in the first round and his 36-hole total of 140 is good for 10th-tie. The junior had just one bogey in his round, taking a six on the par-5 8th hole. He started the back nine with birdies on holes 110 and 12 before finishing the round with birdies on holes 17 and 18. Ironically, Dorn was also 3-under par heading into the final two holes Friday before suffering bogeys on the closing two holes.
Ben Wheeler turned in an even-par round of 72, posting four birdies and four bogeys with his 10 pars. The junior is tied for 16th with a two-day total of 142 (70-72).
Olle Widegren, who was in sixth after the first day thanks to a 69, shot a 5-over par 77 Saturday. His round was marred by a 10 on the par-5 14th hole, otherwise the freshman would have turned in an even-par round with three birdies and three bogeys. He is tied for 37th with a 36-hole total of 146.
The teams will play a final 18 holes on Sunday.
