JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. - Coastal Carolina sophomore Andrew Dorn carded a career-low round, shooting a 2-under 70 to stand tied for fourth, after the first round of the three-day Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, played at the par 72, 7,147-yard Blackthorn Club at The Ridges.
The 37th-ranked Chanticleers, one of five teams ranked among the nation's top 40 in the 13-team field, are in 10th place after finishing with a 3-over 291 Friday. #31 Tennessee and and Memphis sit atop the leaderboard after 18 holes, posting an 8-under 280. Tennessee's Rick Lamb and Memphis' Grant Milner lead the individual field, each shooting a 5-under 67.
Dorn, whose previous career-low round was a 71, was 3-under after 10 holes, having three birdies and seven pars, before suffering his first bogey on the par 4 11th hole. He rallied to birdie the par 3 12th to get back to 30under before suffering a bogey on the par 4 15th.
Senior Sebastian Soderberg, ranked 58thin the nation according to Golfstat, continued his impressive senior season, shooting a 1-under 71 to tie for 12th. He was en route to finishing the first round among the top 5, but a double bogey on 17 and a bogey on 18 led to his 71. Despite the setback at the end of today's round, Soderberg had turned in four rounds of par or better in his seven times out this season.
Roberto Ballesteros is tied for 39th with a 1-over 73. The junior eagled the par 5 14th hole to get to even par for the round before getting a bogey on the 16th hole to finish 1-over. Peter Valasek and Ben Wheeler are tied for 64th, each turning in a round of 5-over 77, while Kevin Vanden Heuvel, playing as an individual, is tied for 66th after shooting a 78.
The event will resume Saturday with 18 holes and conclude with 18 holes Sunday.
