DURHAM, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team shaved 10 strokes off its first-round, shooting 308-294 on Saturday, to stand in 10th place at Duke's Rod Myers Invitational.
Charlotte leads the 54-hole event with a two-round score of 573, two strokes better than second-place and host Duke.
Coastal Carolina senior Charlie Winegardnerleads the Chanticleers with a two-round score of 149 (77-72) to stand in a tie for 29th. Winegardner could not overcome three straight bogeys to start his day, shooting his five-over 77. In the afternoon session, Winegardner was two-over par after seven holes, but finished his round with five birdies versus three bogeys for an even-par 72.
Sebastian Soderberg is one stroke behind Winegardner, shooting 78-72 and his 150 puts in a tie for 32nd. After his six-over round in the morning, Soderberg carded four birdies and four bogeys for an even par 72. Freshman Peter Valasek, making his collegiate debut, also shot 150 on Saturday. Valasek opened with a four-over 76 then traded a bogey for a birdie in the afternoon to shoot 74.
Roberto Ballesteros was a combined three-over on his front nine Saturday, but was a combined five over on his back nine to shoot 77-76 and his 36-hole 153 puts him in a tie for 40th. Sophomore Kevin Vanden Heuvelposted a 155 (78-77) and is tied for 51st.
The team will play a final 18 holes on Sunday.
