LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The 46th-ranked Coastal Carolina men's golf team carded rounds of 289-291 Sunday for a 36-hole total of 580 in the team's 2013-14 opener to stand in a tie for third at the annual Windon Memorial, played at the par 72, 7,202-yard Knollwood Club.
Kent State, ranked 24th nationally, leads the 16-team field with a 7-under 599, followed by host and 35th-ranked Northwestern at 4-under 572. UC Davis and Marquette are tied with Coastal with a 4-over 580.
Chanticleer freshman Christopher Williams leads the team and is tied for ninth after shooting 70-72 for a 2-under 142 in his collegiate debut. Williams was 4-under on the par 5's over two rounds, including one of 13 players to record an eagle.
Ben Wheeler and Peter Valasek are tied for 22nd, each shooting a 1-over 145 over two rounds. Wheeler turned in a 1-over 73 in the first round and an even par 72 in the afternoon. Valasek had a 3-over 75 in the first round and followed with a 2-under 70.
Andrew Dorn has 24 pars through 36 holes, which is 16th-best in the field. However, his 5-over 149 has the junior in a tie for 42nd, shooting 72-75.
Freshman Alfred Ruiz is tied for 70th (74-80=154).
The Windon Memorial will conclude Monday with 18 final holes. Also, Roberto Ballesteros, Josh Pisarri and Olle Widegren will be in action Monday and Tuesday at Gardner-Webb's event held at Myrtle Beach National West Course.
