SKOKIE, Ill. - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team stood in second place after 18 holes today, but the second round Sunday was suspended due to darkness at the Windon Memorial at the par 71, 7,081-yard Skokie Country Club.
The Chanticleers shot a 10-over par 294 in the first round to trail leader and host Northwestern by two strokes. Coastal improved by four strokes in the second round, shooting a 6-over 290, and one of just six teams to complete all 36 holes. As it stands, the Chants remain in second place at 16-over for 36 holes. Leader Northwestern is 12-over with the team getting through 15 holes in its second round. Tennessee is 17-over and also got through at least 15 holes in round two.
Senior Sebastian Soderberg and sophomore Ben Wheeler are tied for sixth, both carding a 2-over par 144. Soderberg was tied for third after 18 holes, shooting 71, before shooting 73 in the afternoon session. Wheeler turned in back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 72.
Sophomore Peter Valasek, who will be playing for his native Slovakia in the 28th Annual World Amateur Team Championship Oct. 4-7, shaved five strokes off his first-round 76 by carding an even-par 71 in round two. Currently, he has moved up 16 spots from 30th into a tie for 14th with a 5-over 147. Junior Roberto Ballesteros currently is tied for 25th, shooting 75-74 for a 7-over par 149. Andrew Dorn is tied for 61st shooting a 14-over 156 (80-76). Easton Renwick is playing as an individual and he was one of the many who did not complete his second round.
The second round will conclude Monday, followed by a final 18 holes upon the completion of the second round.
