Complete The Invitationa First Round Results
KIAWAH ISLAND - The Coastal Carolina men's golf team struggled early, but rallied and sits in fifth place with a 36-hole score of 593 at College of Charleston's The Invitational at the Ocean Course. Notre Dame leads the 12-team field with a score of 584, followed by North Carolina State (585), College of Charleston (588) and Vanderbilt (592).
The Invitational is unique in college golf in that teams may bring six players, as opposed the standard five, with the top four scores of each round counting toward team scoring.
Coastal has two players in the top 10. Charlie Winegardner leads the way for the Chants, carding a one-over 145 (72-73) on the first day to tie for sixth. Starting on the 10th hole in a double shotgun start format, Winegardner slipped to two-over on this first nine holes of the second round only to finish strong with three birdies against two bogeys for his one-over round. He continued his strong play, getting three birdies and three bogeys for his even-par round on his second 18.
Sebastian Soderberg is in ninth (tied) with a three-over 147. Starting on 12, Soderberg struggled early, playing holes 14-18 at six-over par, but rallied to shoot four-under par his final 11 holes for a two-over 74. On his second 18 of the day, he reeled off seven straight pars before a bogey on the par four first. He bounced back with a birdie, only to bogey number four. He finished the second round with seven straight pars for his one-over 73.
Rounding out Coastal's group is Drew Ernst tied for 29th (73-79=152), Steve Delmar tied for 33rd (79-74=153), Tripp McAllister tied for 38th (79-75=154) and Conner Pratt 71st (79-88=167).
The College of Charleston's John Duke Hudson leads the individual field with a five-under 139.
