Soderberg Leads Coastal Men's Golf to Runner-Up Finish at Gene Miranda

The senior reeled off five straight birdies over his final nine holes

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Coastal Carolina had three individuals finish among the top 20 and the Chanticleers moved up two spots to tie for second at the 15-team Gene Miranda Invitational, hosted by Air Force at the par 72, 7,370-yard Eisenhower Golf Course.

Colorado won the event, shooting a 12-under 852, with Coastal and UNLV tying for second, each carding a 54-hole total of even par 864.

Senior Sebastian Soderberg led the Chants Monday and finished tied for third with a 5-under 211 (73-70-68). The Ojersjo, Sweden, native started his round with a birdie, but would suffer a double-bogey on the third hole and a bogey on the seventh. From that point, he showed why he is a three-time All-Big South selection by getting birdies on six of his next eight holes, including five straight, before closing his 4-under round of 68 with three pars.

Junior Roberto Ballesteros, who shared the lead after the opening round, turned in an even par round Monday and tied for sixth with a 3-under 213 (68-73-72). Ballesteros carded 14 pars in the final round, turning in two birdies on the front nine and two bogeys on the back.

Sophomore Andrew Dorn shot a 2-over 74 Tuesday to move up four spots to 20th, marking his first career top 20 finish. His 54-hole total of 219 (72-73-74) was additionally his best effort by five strokes. Classmates Peter Valasek and Ben Wheeler tied for 44th, each with three-round totals of 8-over 224. Valasek knocked four strokes off his second round score to shoot 73 in the final round, while Wheeler shot 76-74-74 for his 224.

Freshman Steven Lu, playing as an individual, concluded his collegiate debut with a 16-over 232 (78-78-76).

Coastal Carolina will return to action Sept. 23-24, playing in the annual Windon Memorial Classic. The event is hosted by Northwestern and played in the Chicagoland area.
